Carl Eugene
Charter
Mar 17, 1940 — Jul 31, 2025
Sand Springs
Carl Eugene Charter entered his heavenly home on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the age of 85. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Mobley-Groesbeck Funeral Service of Sand Springs.
A memorial service celebrating Carl's life will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 7, at Olivet Baptist Church, with Pastor Scott Palmer officiating. Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy. Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12–8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 5–7 p.m.
Carl was born on March 17, 1940, in Avant, Oklahoma, to Courtney Jackson Charter and Alta Madeline (Sherrick) Charter. He grew up in Bartlesville and graduated from Bartlesville High School. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in business administration from Oklahoma State University.
Carl was a proud Cherokee descendant and citizen of the Cherokee Nation. His heritage was a meaningful part of his identity, and he carried it with quiet dignity throughout his life.
It was during summers at church camp that Carl first crossed paths with Nelda Sue Bebee. Years later, while in college, a double date arranged by Nelda's cousin brought them together again, and their relationship began. After college, Carl was accepted into Officers Candidate School with the U.S. Navy in Newport, Rhode Island. While there, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was unable to continue his military service. He returned home and soon married the love of his life, Nelda, on July 25, 1964, at Home Gardens Assembly of God in Tulsa.
Carl was known for his love of sports, especially softball. He played in and was well-known throughout local church leagues for many years. He worked for the Public Service Company as an internal auditor and later with Guardian Security. He retired from Oral Roberts University, where he worked in student accounts.
Carl enjoyed life's simple pleasures—watching ball games, reading, traveling with Nelda, and spending time with family. Together they vacationed every year, often cruising or spending summers in Red River, New Mexico.
A faithful man, Carl was devoted to his church and community. While at Home Gardens Assembly of God, he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon, always willing to lend a hand. He and Nelda later became members of Olivet Baptist Church, where they continued to serve and fellowship.
Carl was known for his quiet nature, gentle spirit, and generosity. He made friends easily and was deeply loved by those who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Bonnie Burchett. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 61 years, Nelda; daughter, Shelli Ann McPherson and husband Michael Paul; grandchildren, Joshua, Rachael, and Rebecka; numerous great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.
Carl's legacy of kindness, faith, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
