She will be laid to rest at Woodland Memorial Park. Celebration of life to follow at 4 p.m. at Bright Morning Farm, 5802 S. 145th W. Ave., Sand Springs. Viewing will be available at the funeral home on Monday from noon to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m.
Cordie was a lifelong resident of Sand Springs, graduating from Sand Springs High School in 1955. She had a passion for bowling and played in leagues with her family, including her parents, her aunt Ruby, and her grandfather, Ira. Together, they won numerous trophies. It was during a trip to a local grocery store that she met Paul Dean Burris, and after seeing each other around town, their love story began. The couple married on October 6, 1955, in Sand Springs and built a home where they raised their children: Vic, Steve, and Mickey.
Cordie was a woman of many talents and interests. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and traveling, venturing to places like Mexico, Europe, Israel, and the Sistine Chapel. She cherished taking her grandchildren on adventures, gifting one granddaughter a trip to New York City for her graduation and another a journey to the Redwoods in California. She also made countless memories with them at many amusement parks including Disney, Silver Dollar City, and various caverns.
Throughout her life, Cordie was a caretaker at heart, tending to her grandchildren, parents, aunts, and uncles. She was the true matriarch of the family—the glue that held everyone together. Strong-willed and outspoken, Cordie was a staunch Democrat who encouraged her children and grandchildren to think for themselves and keep an open mind. She was also a passionate supporter of the arts, frequently attending performances at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center and Discoveryland.
Cordie's career was as impressive as her personal life. She worked at Hissom Memorial Center for Dr. Rodriquez and Dr. Rinoso before transitioning to AT&T in clerical administration. Later, she assisted the U.S. military recruitment offices, administering aptitude tests.
Among the many things that held special meaning to Cordie, yellow butterflies reminded her of her father, and they often appeared around her. Two of her favorite sayings were: "Everything leaves something beautiful behind" and "Love leaves more than death can take away."
Cordie was a faithful member of Broadway Baptist Church and is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul (2022); her parents; and her brother, Johnny Barnett, Jr.
She leaves behind a loving family who will carry on her legacy: her children: Vic Burris and wife, Linda, of Tulsa; Steve Burris of Sand Springs; and Mickey Burris and Pam Miller of Silver City; Her sister: Barbara Barnett of Sand Springs; Her grandchildren: Melissa "Missy" Burris, Johnathan Burris and wife, Stacy, Nicole Wickline, Mika Burris, Stephanie Emerald and husband, Brett, Scott Burris, Shay Billingsly and wife, Kendra, Matthew Shope, and Miah Williamson; Her great-grandchildren: Madylan, Kennedy, Isaac, Jax, Johnnie Ann, Damon, Shawn, Bryce, Jacob, Brayden, Jackson, Hudson, Rosson, Seazen, Jayden, Chase, Trinity, and Carson; and Her great-great-grandchildren: Ashton, Kampbell, and Klovis.
Cordie's strength, love, and wisdom will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She was the boss, the matriarch, and above all, the heart of her family.
