David Henry Miller, Ph.D.

Dr. David Henry Miller of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, passed away on November 16, 2024, in Tulsa. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Mobley-Groesbeck funeral services, with interment in Woodland Cemetery, Sand Springs.

David Henry Miller was born on March 19, 1941, in Ogden, Utah, to David E. Miller and Della Snell Miller. He had happy memories of his childhood years in Salt Lake City and in Los Angeles. Coming from a family with a deep commitment to education, David earned bachelor's and master's degrees in history from the University of Utah, and he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study for a year at the University of Cologne, Germany. He then attended the University of New Mexico, where he earned a Ph.D. in History, focusing on the history of the American West. It was there he met his wife, Sylvia.  He was employed as a professor of history at Cameron University in Lawton from 1970 until 2008. For a number of years, he also served as Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and held other administrative positions.  After retiring to Norman, David continued to pursue his research, focusing on journals of nineteenth century European travellers in the West. He joined the South Canadian Chapter of Westerners International and served as Sheriff of the Norman chapter for a number of years. He was also an active member of the Southern Trails Association, and he published several articles in Desert Tracks, a publication of which he served as co-editor.  David was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed many bike rides, river float trips, and western travels with his family. He was known for his fluency in German and for his love of bicycle riding, a sport which he continued to participate in until his late 70's.  He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia; three sons and their spouses: Cody and Karen Miller of Sand Springs; Brian Miller of Denver; and Jed and Andrea Miller of New York City; two granddaughters, Avery and Emily Miller; and one sister, Anne Eckman of Farmington, Utah.
