Dorothy Lee
Morton
Mar 29, 1929 — Oct 18, 2025
Sand Springs
Born and raised in Barnsdall, Oklahoma on March 29, 1929 to Fred and Anna (Downing) Lee, Dorothy's life balanced between joy, hardships, and triumphs. At the tender age of six months, her mother suddenly passed away. Subsequently, she was adopted by her great uncle James K. Downing and wife, Ona, and was raised as an only child.
In her early twenties, Dorothy met and married William (Bill) Thomas Morton. They started married life in Pawhuska before Bill was drafted into the Army. They soon added two daughters and, eventually, moved to Sand Springs in 1959. Their third child was born shortly thereafter.
Considering the length of her life, Dorothy saw many changes in the American way of life. Growing up there was no telephone, air conditioning, color television, microwave, computers, and certainly no cell phones! World War II, putting a man on the moon, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the September 11th bombing were all within her lifetime. She used to tell stories of some of these times. Stories about cousins that went to WWII – some of them came home; some didn't. Stories about her horse, her Daddy, her early family life, and the lives of her children.
There were not only changes in America but changes in her personal life too. She was widowed in 1988 when Bill passed away. This was a difficult and lonely time in her life. However, in 1995, she married Robert Leon McClain. They settled into a comfortable life of companionship and contentment.
Dorothy was a Christian for many, many years. She lived her life with quiet faith and steadfast values until approximately four years ago. Then, as a bold statement of faith, she rededicated her life to Christ and (at over 90 years old) climbed into the baptismal waters, requesting to be baptized again. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church for 36 years and leaves behind many friends there. She was one of the founding members of the quilting group at Trinity and enjoyed making quilts for the needy for many years. Dorothy was also a long-term participant in making flower arrangements (a fund-raising program) at the Senior Citizens Center in Sand Springs.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Bill, husband Leon, daughter Lorri Harvey, and grandson Michael Battenfield. She is survived by daughters Tommye Battenfield and husband Charlie, Doresa Wood and husband David, son-in-law Brad Harvey and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
