Emmitt Burns,
Iii
Sep 14, 1951 — Sep 17, 2024
Sand Springs
Forrest "Emmitt" Burns, III, departed this life on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the age of 73. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Mobley-Groesbeck Funeral Service of Sand Springs.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, September 23, at the Jim Groesbeck Memorial Chapel.
Emmitt was born on September 14, 1951, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended Sand Springs schools and later earned his associate's degree in business from Tulsa Community College. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite.
Emmitt spent most of his life working at his family's business, Shell Creek Landfill, where his hard work and dedication left a lasting impact. In the 1980s, he pursued an apprenticeship as a pilot; but his true passion was chicken fighting which he shared with his sons. He also had a love for deer hunting and fishing, enjoying the outdoors with family and friends.
Emmitt had a generous heart and was always there when others needed him. His kindness and willingness to help never went unnoticed. After the passing of his beloved wife, Helen Irene Burns, Emmitt made sure to continue caring for his family, preparing meals and ensuring warmth and comfort when they came home. His love for Helen remained strong throughout their 33 years together, 27 of which were spent in marriage after they wed on July 14, 1977, at the Justice of the Peace at the Tulsa County Courthouse. Emmitt lovingly embraced Helen's daughters, Heidi and Tammy, as his own.
A loyal friend, skilled hunter, and devoted family man, Emmitt will be remembered for his big heart and willingness to always lend a hand.
Emmitt is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; his sister, Kim Burns; and his brother, Billy Dale Burns. He is survived by his children: Heidi Lakey and her husband, Matthew, of Tulsa, Tammy Trammell of Broken Arrow, Emmitt Burns, IV, Andy Burns, and Matt Burns all of Sand Springs. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Burns of Sand Springs; and his grandchildren: Jayden Trammell, Cody Livingston, Gage Lakey, Faith Burns, Jordyn Lakey, and Ashlynne Lakey.
Emmitt will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of kindness and love will live on through his family and friends.
