John Allen "Johnny" Horton, 83, of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Mobley-Groesbeck Funeral Service of Sand Springs.

Johnny was born on May 23, 1941, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Floyd Nelson Horton and Mannie Irene (Lay) Horton.

Johnny grew up on Wekiwa Road near Bruner Station in Sand Springs, where his love for mechanics and hot rods began. During high school, his family moved into Sand Springs, but his passion for engines and racing only grew stronger.

Johnny was a talented and inventive mechanic, known for building engines, specializing in heads, and crafting several hot rod cars. He was deeply involved in the world of sprint cars, drag racing, and stock cars, and even worked on boats. In the early 1980s, Johnny patented a racing alcohol carburetor, a testament to his ingenuity and expertise. For over 20 years, Johnny made the pilgrimage to the Bonneville Salt Flats, a place he cherished for its celebration of speed and innovation. He also supported his nephew in competitions, sharing his knowledge and skills.

Johnny was a complex and remarkable individual: reclusive, stubborn, strong-willed, intelligent, inventive, inquisitive, and occasionally ornery. He had a knack for puzzles and was always curious about the world around him.

Johnny's first marriage was to Emily, and together they welcomed their daughter, Roni Chance. His second marriage, to Janice, lasted 20 years.

Johnny is survived by his daughter, Roni Chance Delozier of Stillwater; his half-brother, John Thomas "J.T." Coffman of Lawton; three nephews; and one niece. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wilbur Horton.

Johnny's life was a testament to hard work, creativity, and a relentless drive to pursue his passions. His legacy will be cherished by his family, friends, and the many people who admired his talents and determination.
