Leonard Herman
Brehm
Feb 17, 1927 — May 16, 2023
Tulsa
Leonard H. Brehm was the sixth of nine children born to Margaret (Traudt) and George Brehm on a farm near Weatherford, Oklahoma on February 17, 1927. At age 96 he passed away peacefully May 16, 2023, surrounded by loving family at Montereau Retirement Community.
From birth until 1943 Leonard lived in farming communities and went to school at Corn Bible School and Corn High School. He was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Congregational Church. His family was one of strength, with an undeniable faith in God, an impeccable work ethic and a love for each other that was fostered into his children, nieces and nephews.
In 1943, at the age of 16 he moved with his family to Clinton, Oklahoma where he graduated from Clinton High School Class of 1945. Following a tour of duty with the United Sates Navy he attended Oklahoma A & M (now Oklahoma State University) for two semesters. In 1950 he was recalled to active duty with the Navy serving on a ship in San Diego, California.
Leonard met "the love of his life", Leta, when he was employed with Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO). They married on June 6, 1954, in the First Methodist Church in Clinton, OK. He acquired a wife and also gained three stepchildren, Jack Hooks and twins Joe and Jan Hooks. Their family expanded when the children found their spouses: Joe and Jeanette Hooks married, followed by Jack and Jan Reese and then Jack and Carolyn Hooks. These marriages led to five grandchildren (Mike, Amy and Julie and Kris and Jeff) and then 18 great grandkids blessed Leonard and Leta's lives as well.
From September 1948 until 1955 Leonard worked on the Clinton line crew and advanced to journeyman lineman quite quickly. He transferred to Tipton, OK late 1955 where he began a career serving as District Manager of PSO. During the remainder of his career with PSO he served the cities of Nowata, Bartlesville, Vinita, Clinton, and Sand Springs as District Manager. Each transfer provided challenging and rewarding opportunities for many achievements. He retired from PSO in 1986.
Community service and charitable contributions were always high priorities for Leonard. He was active on fund raising drives and in civic organizations. He was most proud of his recognition as a Paul Harris Rotary Fellow by the Sand Springs Rotary Club. He contributed in multiple ways to the United Methodist Church in each community. He was an election official for over 20 years with the Tulsa County Election Board and volunteered for the American Red Cross for 25 years with over 2,000 hours accumulated. In addition, he rang Salvation Army Christmas Bells on numerous occasions.
Leonard was not only loved by immediate family; he was also loved by his many siblings and their families. His role as family historian led to many written stories of the Brehm family growing up in Western Oklahoma. His memory and attention to detail amazed everyone; he was always the "go to" Dad, Grandfather and Uncle family members called when they needed specifics about family history. He was very proud of his German heritage and was a longtime member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia in Tulsa. Survivors include: son, Joe Hooks (Jeanette), daughter, Jan Reese (Jack), daughter-in-law, Carolyn Hooks and brother, Sam Brehm. He was preceded in death by his son, Jack and wife, Leta.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and medical professionals at Montereau Retirement Community for their kind, loving care during the time he called Montereau home. Also, the special care provided by Season's Hospice was greatly appreciated.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Red Cross of Tulsa. Leave your memories of Leonard and view his tribute online at www.mogro.co.
