Matthew Grant
Harris
Aug 8, 1966 — Nov 11, 2023
Sand Springs
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matthew Grant Harris, known as Matt, who departed from this world on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at his home succumbing to congestive heart failure. He was born on August 8, 1966, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to proud parents Bill and Carolyn (Minnix) Harris.
Matthew was raised in the close-knit community of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, where he developed his passion for music from a young age. He always knew what he wanted to do. He graduated from Charles Page High School in 1984, leaving an indelible mark as an active member of the school band.
In pursuit of his musical dreams, Matt attended The Guitar Institute in Los Angeles, honing his skills as a guitar virtuoso. His profound talents were not confined to a single instrument; he was also a gifted singer and prolific songwriter. His musical journey led him to collaborate with many luminaries such as his father-in-law, Leon Russell, and Bernie Taupin.
Throughout his life, Matthew called various places home, from Sand Springs to Nashville and Los Angeles. His diverse musical career saw him lead bands each leaving a unique imprint on the music scene. His band, Forte', gained a local following and played clubs in the Tulsa area. In California, he led the bands Bad Habit and House of Usher, and upon returning to Sand Springs, led the band, Jungle Blue. He co-wrote numerous songs with his brother, Sam, who recorded many of them. He also wrote music for a multitude of prominent television shows.
Matthew was married to Blue Bridges, and although they eventually separated, they remained close friends. Their union blessed them with a daughter, Halen Leigh Harris, who survives him. Matthew was not only a devoted father but also a loving grandfather to Ari.
Beyond his musical prowess, Matthew's personality was a symphony of creativity, humor, and kindness. His playful and ridiculous sense of humor endeared him to friends and family alike. Described as "lightning in a bottle," he was a constant source of imagination and creativity.
In his journey through life, Matthew was not just a musician but also a spiritual thinker, contemplating existential philosophies. He was a kind and empathetic soul, caring deeply for humanity. He was a loving friend, a most excellent father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle; and he played an invaluable role in helping his mother care for his father, Bill, during his last years demonstrating Matt's gentle and loving nature.
Matthew Grant Harris is survived by his daughter, Halen; grandson, Ari; mother, Carolyn; brother, Sam; brother-in-law, Danny; nephew, Cooper; and Aunt Betty and her family. He was loved by so, so many. His memory will forever be cherished by the many lives he touched, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a profound appreciation for the magic of music. May he rest in eternal peace.
A celebration of Matt Harris will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, December 9, at Bright Morning Farm, 5802 South 145th West Avenue, Sand Springs, OK 74063.
