Funeral services in Jim Groesbeck Memorial Chapel on Wednesday August 21, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. with interment in Woodland Memorial Park with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy.
Born on November 26, 1938, in Guthrie, OK, to Jay C. Burgess and Josie May (Hicks) Burgess, Orville lived a life marked by service, hard work, and a deep love for family and friends.
Orville proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked at the cotton mill, The Box Factory, and later for the City of Tulsa. His commitment to his community was evident in his active membership with the Mannford American Legion Post 128, where he served on the Funeral Honor Guard, paying respects to his fellow veterans. He was also a proud 32nd-degree Mason with the Mannford Masonic Lodge 515 and Tulsa Scottish Rite.
Known for his sharp wit and humor, Orville was someone who could make anyone smile. His storytelling was legendary among those who knew him. He had a passion for the outdoors, especially fishing with his daughter, Angela, and deer hunting, which he enjoyed with his nephew, Robert. When not in the great outdoors, Orville could often be found at a bingo hall.
Orville was preceded in death by his son, Charles Dewane Burgess; his parents, Jay and Josie; and his siblings: Nadine Newell, Vivian Bain, Arlie Burgess, Dorothy King, Margaret Ament, Guy "Fibber" Burgess, Nina House, and a baby sister.
He is survived by his daughter, Angela Rich; his grandchildren: Tracer Burgess-Brown and husband, Bron, Samantha Wertman (Vincent), and Amelia Rich (Russell); as well as his cherished great-grandchildren: Gracie Wertman, Mackenzie Hood, and Millie Brown, who is on the way. Orville's legacy of kindness, humor, and love will live on through his family and the many friends whose lives he touched.
Orville will be deeply missed, but his stories, laughter, and love for life will be remembered always by those fortunate enough to have known him.
