Affectionately known as Susan Stockwell, she was also lovingly called Granny Susan, Suz, Suzie-Woozie, and many other endearing names by those who knew her best. She was a woman full of warmth, kindness, and an ever-present joy that touched the lives of everyone she met.
Susan was born on April 13, 1942, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Marvin Meschke and Norma (Countryman) Walker. She spent her early years in Hutchinson, attending Hutchinson High School, where she excelled as an avid swimmer and swimming coach. She later continued her education at the University of Oklahoma.
In 1962, Susan married Lance Stockwell in Norman, Oklahoma and were blessed with two children: Kelsey Dian and David Christopher. Susan and Lance later went their separate ways.
Susan was dedicated to raising her children and after they were grown, she found enjoyment in professional life as a valued member of the optometry staff at Tulsa Eye Clinic. Beyond her career, she was deeply involved in her faith community, serving as a greeter at Asbury Church in Tulsa. She loved welcoming people and ensuring they felt cherished.
Her passions included gardening, growing and maintaining indoor plants, painting woven baskets and adopting cats. She was also an avid volunteer, devoting time to many organizations. She played an instrumental role in forming the Margaret Hudson Program, a public school designed to support pregnant teens in continuing their education and improving their social situations. Her commitment to service and her community was unwavering.
Susan's love for children was well-known. She took great pleasure in spending time with her grandsons and, as an avid skier in her youth, was proud to have been able to ski with them. She was an ardent fan of her grandnieces (Steele Campbell and Demi Donahoe), traveling across Oklahoma and Arkansas to watch them play softball.
Susan was known for her infectious spirit, love for people, and ability to make lifelong friends. She had a special way of making everyone feel precious—her favorite term of endearment. Her generosity, enthusiasm, and unwavering faith made a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know her.
She is survived by her son, Dr. David Stockwell and wife, Michele of Washington, D.C.; and her beloved grandchildren, Thomas Stockwell and Charlie Stockwell, both of Washington, D.C.; as well as her half-brothers, Mark Walker of Carbondale, Colorado, Brad Meschke of Phoenix, Arizona and Jay Meschke of Kansas City, Missouri; her niece, Jill Donahoe of Bentonville, Arkansas and nephew Matt Meschke of Wichita, Kansas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Norma Walker and Marvin Meschke; her daughter, Kelsey Stockwell; and her brother, Gus Meschke.
Susan's legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering faith will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
