Virginia Jane Mayes departed this life on Monday, June 13, 2022, at the age of 93. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Mobley-Groesbeck Funeral Service of Sand Springs.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, June 16, at Meadowbrook Cemetery.

The daughter of Hugh Russell Vanderford and Leah Audrey (Drake) Vanderford Smith was born December 1, 1928, in Stark, Kansas. The family moved to a farm outside of Woodward, Oklahoma; and at the age of 13, Virginia went to work as a waitress at a restaurant in Waynoka. There she met and married Maurice Webb in 1946. Though the marriage failed it produced two sons who were the lifelong beneficiaries of Virginia's unlimited capacity for nurturance.

On December 3, 1954, Virginia married the love of her life, Louis Charles Mayes in Woodward. They made their home in Tulsa, where Virginia continued to live in the same home until 2014.

Virginia was a homemaker focused solely on her family until her sons reached their teen years when she began working outside the home. She worked at Sylvan Printing for twenty years where she was a favorite of co-workers because of her kindness and nurturing nature. But for Virginia her family was always the most preeminent focus of her life. Motherhood was her most joyful role and loving nurturance was her defining characteristic. She was a natural teacher and she and Louis never missed one of their boys baseball games or school functions, and it was the same for the grandchildren. Their home was where all of the neighborhood kids spent their time, and she was their second mother to all of them. The neighborhood children she nurtured continued to visit her throughout her life to express their thanks and caring. Louis always lovingly called Virginia, "Honey", and this is what all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all who met her came to call her. Louis and Virginia enjoyed taking the grandchildren to see family and on many roadtrips.

Virginia was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, and a wonderful and patient listener to all her friends.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband, Louis; her parents; and sisters: Blance Bixler and Alberta Richey.

Survivors include her sons: David Webb and wife, Donna of Tulsa, and Russell Webb and wife, Stephanie Rhoades of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren: Jason Webb and wife Sara, Lori Conaway and husband Justin, Aaron Webb and wife Judy, and Cinnamon Simpson; and great-grandchildren: Bailey Webb, Madison Webb, Ava Conaway, and Eddie Webb.
